I really want to learn an instrument next year (2009) and I have two choices : guitar or piano. It can't be the more difficult one, because I'm 13 1/2 and I have to concentrate on tough High School work well beyond what most year eights (in 2009 year nines) are capable of. I would be very dedicated though - and also, can you please give personal opinion of what is more fun? Btw, I have a guitar and my family has a piano, so no sweat about that
Please! I need answers!

Piano because

1. you must co-ordinate BOTH hands

2. One must practice one hand then the other then put it together

3. grades become difficult

4. practise is needed regulary (but this is the same with all instruments.)

But i would recommend it as a instrument because it introduces someone to music and gets them to read music and understand the notes values etc.

This is an impossible question to answer because there are too many variables. Difficulty is up to the individual and what you attempt to play. In a week you can be playing rock songs on either instrument but you can study all your life and not play classical or jazz well on either. Again, it depends on what you attempt to play, how early you start, how much time you invest and how gifted you are. Physically, guitar is generally more demanding for the initiate simply because your fingers hurt, your hand hurts, the guitar isn't tuned, not set up, etc. With piano you can depress the keys softly and not feel pain. However, you will once you start playing octaves, scales and over-stretching your hands. Generally that is left to the more experienced players. I started on guitar and love guitar. However, piano/keyboards are absolutely essential. I'm happy to own and play both. Ok, bqs -- I never took lessons except advanced music theory which was writing and arranging for an array of instruments in different keys. It was a waste of time for me. I practiced 10 hours a day and couldn't afford competent teachers. When I finally got a keyboard I ditched school a week and just practiced like a troll receding into his cave. When I went back to school I could play chords and scales. Site reading bass clef was a bit slow for me because I started too late. I'll never be a classical prodigy but for the music I write and play, I'm okay. I have no idea what you mean by levels but on guitar I can play almost anything I try to play excluding something phenomenal like Segovia. On Piano I'm restricted to rock but can play anything in that genre. I typically use keyboards as a MIDI controller for VSTi's. I do a lot of recording.

Go for guitar! I did 2 1/2 years ago and my dad taught me and I am capable of a lot on my own! It's an amazing instrument! You can play either acoustic or electric. I play electric and you can use a lot of effects on an amp to play along to a lot of songs or even write your own songs. I love guitar. Piano is pretty hard.

In my opinion, guitar is harder. I have been playing for two years, and it is really fun, but I am better at the piano which I have been playing for only about 6 months. Which is quite odd, considering I haven't taken any lessons. If you do decide to play the guitar, however, try to start out acoustic before electric because it will make your fingers stronger, and then playing electric will be a breeze. ^-^

Good luck!

It really depends on what style you look to take up. If you want to learn simple chords for music, guitar would be better, because even in the classical aspect, piano is a very difficult instrument. It requires using both hands independently and reading music on two different clefs. On guitar, music is read on one clef or on the simple tablature template. Your hands typically coordinate with each other to produce a variety of notes with ease. Guitar is also capable of crossing a whole spectrum of music genres, from classical to metal to your calm acoustic punk stuff like Good Riddance or Hey There Delilah. Piano is typically weak in that, being used mainly for classical, jazz, swing, and similar. In addition, learning guitar also means you're learning bass, so you're kind of learning two instruments at once.

So my opinion, if not obvious, would be the guitar.

They are both pretty hard, with the guitar you have to press the frets properly so it doesn't squeak and you also have to be able to reach multiple frets when playing chords. You also have to be able to move along the neck of the guitar swiftly to be able to play in at the correct tempo, but that will come with time.

With the piano you have to remember where the notes are, press the keys properly and you also need to reach across keys to play chords. You also need to press the pedals of the piano with your foot at the right time, adding to the difficulty. But they are both reasonably hard.

Piano by far. You have to consider what 8 fingers are doing, as well as your foot. It's like rubbing your belly, patting your head, stomping your feet, and eating ice cream while reading.

Anyone can play guitar... but many professional musicians know how to play both. They're amazing instruments if you practice. Practice. Practice.

i think that piano as harder but i think that you should still take it because it should help you with all of your homeowrk and work and stuff because it divides your brain forcing you to do many things at onc which will help you multi task with everything else in life!
