The strings are (LO to HIGH):

E A D G B e and numbered:

6 5 4 3 2 1 accordingly.

It's first and foremost important to always play in tune. Playing an out-of-tune guitar is as ineffective as driving a car while pushing the brakes...it will produce nothing desirable...so make sure you have either a good electric tuner (cheap, probably $10-20) or you know how to tune each string from the others by ear -using the 5th fret of the 6th string to tune the 5th string, etc. Then, regardless of which key you're in, the strings will at least sound right when strummed.

Get a chord book from a local music shop to learn the basics, they are widely available and fairly cheap. Or, simply google 'guitar chords', they are plastered everywhere for free on the net.

Tablature (referred to as guitar "tabs") is a genius way to read how to play your favorite songs. My favorite site is www.ultimate-guitar.com. Once you practice enough to develop calluses, and learn how to place your fingers properly, you will begin to sharpen your skill. It takes time, LOTS of being pissed off, and LOTS of having sore fingers. Stick with it. Chicks like a musician. Unless you are a chick, then guys like a chick that can play.

Oh, and disregard the thumbs down. Someone's just jealous I was more thorough than them!

I did exactly the same thing,, I think it's becaus ei was darft enough to think i would be able to pick it up and play.

Ook well the best place to start, is chords i rekon becuase you might find tabs to difficult to read i''m still having problems. Lol

Anyways pick a song you like prefrable some easy chords which if you go on www.ultimate-guitar.com they show you how to play the chords. so you will be able to see if you can play it before you print it off. [[ the chords are also printable]]

[[I hope you have a qwik tuner becuase i would advise you to get one if you haven't because it''s very hard to tune without one.]]

Then learn the chords slowly but surley,

People on youtube can help you as they have videos on there that show you how to play. << I advise.

I hope i''ve helped you on the basics, oh and learn the parts on your guitar too, it does help when you know what people are talking about <<3

Good luck

I'll summarize..

First, know your instrument. To be able to play it, you have to know it first. Learn which part is which. Learn how to maintain and tune it. Learn how to clean and store it.

Next, listen to a lot of music. Listen to your influences. Hours and hours of practicing is worth nothing if you don't know how to listen.

And of course lastly, practice. Start slow, with the basics. Then slowly progress..

good luck!

The best way to learn is to have someone teach you in person.Learn all the basic chords ABCDEFG and how to read tablature.

Wholenote.com can be helpful.

Stick with it!
