Herco

I started using these picks when I first started playing bass guitar over 10 years ago. I have been hooked on these ever since. The sound you can get out of a bass with these picks is amazing, very bright and crisp!

The Medium thickness Herco picks are my favorite, but they ARE flexible enough that you lose a bit of volume when really trying to thrash some strings. The Extra Heavy picks are a bit uncomfortable over the top of the thumb, but are bearable.

I've played many shows and recorded multiple times with the Medium, Heavy, and Extra Heavy Herco picks. I can't play a show without them anymore! I've tried other brands of thumb picks (Dunlop) but these are simply the best!

These CAN and WILL break over time. I broke three Medium picks in one show, but I had been practicing and playing with them for three weeks. They're plenty durable, but will break eventually.

BUY THESE PICKS, they're GREAT!

PS- I've noticed people writing reviews on the other thicknesses of Herco picks saying that "They came stretched out, they don't stay on my thumb, etc." With hard enough playing NO pick will stay on your finger, and I always bend and flex the "thumb-ring" on these picks to fit my finger, if its too tight, I stretch it "flatter". If its too loose I "roll it under".

I still pinch this thumb pick between my thumb and index finger because I play a very rapid downstrum-upstrum (8th notes) style bass (punk/rock/alternative) but the thumb-ring on these gives you the extra support you need for those really fast riffs.

funnily enough, I use dunlop jazz III picks. these are actually guitar picks.

[Scroll down to bottom] I also use a DIR EN GREY DIE custom pick (i'm a bit of a fanboy...)

Basically most bassists use the kind of circular triangle pick that the DIR EN GREY DIE pick is (although that's a guitar pick!?). Just go to a shop, try out the different thicknesses and see what works best. DUNLOP is a good brand. As I've said, don't feel restricted by the circular triangle picks, like I use a tiny guitar pick! I prefer guitar picks, as I can't seem to get enough grip on bass picks.

also 'most bassists use fingers or nails' is complete bulls***. I use picks based on what my band's songs are like, I can play fingerstyle and pick, and I can slap faster than playing with a pick. It's all down to preference of tone and playability, so just ignore people who say 'true bassists don't use a pick'.

fingernails. Grow your nails like a classical guitarist. And maybe take a lesson or two from a guitarist who plays nylon-string classic guitar so that you learn how to produce a good tone and how to care for your nails so that the work for you not against you.

Most bassists don't use a pick or nails tho. Learning to slap is probably a more important skill IMHO

Choice of a pick is very subjective. As a guitarist, I've changed from one kind of pick to others over the years. Other guys I know use other picks and nobody is right or wrong. use what works for you.

I find that hitting hard with a stiff pick drives a band better -- hits the beat right with the bass drum -- than the fingers. Guess what I use? An old very worn silver 50 cent coin, the kind with the walking Statue of Liberty on the front and an eagle on the back. The most worn and thus the cheapest one a coin dealer has. I have a metal thingy over my strings that I rest my palm on, and send the string a-windin . :)
