I give up. "Store-bought" generally has negative connotations. Store-bought vs. homemade... Can't find anything reputable (or anything at all) on "store-bought woman."

"Neil explained that the song was about getting drunk on cheap Rose wine, which was a relief to me because I also thought that "store bought woman" line was a bit seedy."
Re: meaning of "Cracklin' Rose": from http://www.songfacts.com/detail.php?id=4009:
"Cracklin' Rosie" is a bottle of wine. This song tells of an Indian tribe in Canada who apparently had more men than women. Diamond said he'd visited the tribe and Cracklin' Rosie was a nickname they used for their own homemade alcoholic brew which the single men of the tribe would sit round the fire together drinking - he thought the name was catchy so he used it in a song. (thanks, Emma - London, England)...
Actually, the story about the indians and the wine came from a reporter that was interviewing Neil. SHE told Neil the story to him about there not being enough women so those men who didn't have a date spent the evening drinking Crackling Rose', and Neil changed the name to Cracklin Rosie. Check out the facts in the book "Neil Diamond: A Solitary Star". The story was verified and written about in this book by the author.
