How do you get a song copywrited if you it is not in written format?

I have written about 10 songs for a CD that I am recording. I have not scored them. How do I go about getting a copyright on the material?

You can do this at the US Copyright Office – see the last 3 links in the source box. The application is fairly simple & the cost is $45 per application.



Despite what others state, a "poor man's" copyright is NOT the same as registering it. Here's what the US Copyright Office has to say:



"The practice of sending a copy of your own work to yourself is sometimes called a 'poor man’s copyright.' There is no provision in the copyright law regarding any such type of protection, and it is not a substitute for registration."

You can send the CD, containing all 10 songs, to the Registar of Copyrights (www.copyright.gov) and register the whole collection as a sound recording. Copyright is actually a fairly confusing concept, once you get into song copyright for lead sheets vs. tapes/CDs and so on... But copyrighting your work using the method described above will work. You can't just send it in, though; You have to send it with the proper application form, which you can get at the web address I gave.



BTW... It's copyRIGHT, not copyWRITE, because it's about your RIGHTS, and not related to you WRITING a song. A common mix-up... Good luck!

Somtimes you'll use a double chorus. browse for copyright on google an start looking. you can send the lyrics and the recording. dont nned the scores. i ve done it. i am not sure but you have to dend 2 of each (lirycs and rec)
