Do the music charts, or record sales make any difference to you?

It really doesn't bother me who is number one in the singles charts or how many copies an album has sold.
If I like the album then that is all that matters to me.

No. I buy music sound because I like it and the key and frequency of the song is what body and ears want, not what some chart is presenting as the best song. If I'm writing a song then I'll look at the top five songs and see what key they are in, usually they top five are in the same key or rel minor. Then the song that is at the bottomof the chart and moving up and see what key it is in and transpose the song I have into that key. Hopefully it will race up the chart as well. Keys are a construction of sound and frequency which change throughout the year and affect the buying public which is represented by the charts and some people do go and buy on that marker. You mike hear a song to day and hate it, only to hear it a year from now and like it, the key of the first release didn't excite as the ket of the second release does. Hopoe this has helped you Dave.

The charts should reflect public opinion rather than the other way round. And the charts will then be used by the record companies to see what's popular and who they should sign up, etc.
Now that I'm 30 something and don't listen to Radio 1, I really don't care, and really don't know what's riding high in the charts. The last great album I heard was Gogol Bordello's - "Gypsy Punk" which I don't believe reached the top 10 at any point

Not really. The only difference is that if a song is doing quite well in the charts then its on the radio more so I am more likely to hear it. This can go either way though, I can start to like it and go buy it, or it can get on my nerves and make me hate it.
I know some people who will only buy tracks from bands who are unheard of cos the buyer likes to be seen as original and alternative. I find that a bit odd and false. You should buy what you like. Even if it does mean you normally like rock but you've just bought the next Britney Spears single. It takes all sorts after all.

Yes my friend you've hit the nail on the head there.I couldn't tell you what is in the singles charts, and I'm not in the least bit interested. Now albums are another matter all together. Anyone can make a good single, but to make a complete album of good songs takes real talent.

Now that the UK charts are going to be decided, not by physical sales, but by downloads, there will be some drastic changes. The Beatles are thought to be about to take most of the top 10 places. But if that is what people are listening to, then that should be reflected in the charts.
Get rid of some of the rubbish they call music at the moment - although there are always a couple of hotties in there somewhere.

It doesn't influence what music I would buy, and I think until recently, it was a bit of a joke. However, 2 changes that have been brought in recently makes it seem a good way of judging the quality/longevity of the music out there.
Firstly, it now incorporates downloads - this clearly needed to happen with the iPod generation taking over. And secondly, a single/album doesn't have to be classified as a new release in order to be eligible to be in the charts. I LOVE this idea - it means that truly important music, or music that stands the test of time, can continue to be recognised...
2007-02-19 09:53:17 UTC
No not personally, I have no interest in whos number #1 in the singles or the album charts, its just my job to make sure that they look good for the customers - I work in a music shop.

Not really, i like a lot of metal which almost obviously never hits the top 20 charts let alone even the top 100, i do occasionally like some of the stuff that has high record sales though.

I agree with you. The charts have nothing to do with or have no influence over my choice of music. I definitely do not run out to buy an album just because it's at the top of the charts.

It does kind of make a difference, because I prefer bands that are not mainstream and well-known, and usually when they make it to the radio, I don't like them much any more because all of the posers like them and it ruins the band. (AHEM: Fall Out Boy)
But I do like bands on the charts, too. Green Day is still awesome, not their new stuff, their old albums,a and they were best sellers
Guns N Roses is totally awesome, and their albums were probably all on the charts
(I'm too young to confirm that)

It makes no difference to me either, the only thing I find it easy for is if you look on the list in the shop then can go straight to the number in the display to get the cd you wanted. I am always happy if someone I like gets to number 1 though just for their sense of achievment. And when things go to number 1 for a second time, like Snow Patrol or the Killers I just think thats nice for them.
2007-02-19 00:49:15 UTC
No and especially not these days as the quality of music generally has slipped. Also with MTV showing old stuff along with new it means younger people are getting turned onto other sounds than what's in the chart now. So increasingly back catalogues are becoming as important as the contemporary.
2007-02-18 14:34:05 UTC
no- as i gave up on the charts 9 years ago. almost all the artists care more about making money, than proper music. it doesn't make a difference to me as music nowadays is crap. i listen to the old stuff from the 60s, 70s, 80s and 90s. cannot be arsed with the 00s and today's music scene

not really i will buy what i like and not what someone else says i should all the best music will never go to number one anyway cos fans would rather buy an album than a single
all the songs that get no. 1 these days are all just rubbish anyway like leona lewis and mika etc!!

Not a blind bit of difference, never has for me. I'm more likely to buy something that's not been in the charts than hit #1 - because if it's popular with that many people it's usually rubbish.

I suspect the people with more money than sense who prebook anything and everything actually put up the prices beyond what they need to be, so yeah the charts make a difference to the amount that I would like to pay.

Charts are a con to push an artist. Think hard how many songs make #1 that you think really belong in the trashcan. Radio stations and DJs are often offered incentives to push certain artists and music. Follow your own taste and dont be conned.

Well worryingly - YES.
I don't listen to the charts and I really don't care what is in them, but when we end up in some old peoples home dribbling down our shirts (okay so I'll be there sooner than you I guess, but might still be there when you arrive) the care assistant will be keeping us amused with NOW 58 - or something similar.
What do you mean you don't like it!
Everyone likes it!
See what I mean ... depressing isn't it.

I'm not sure that "music" is a true description of the drivel that comes out of Pop Idol and the like. The fact that "pensioners" are getting back on the stage to sell out audiences says everything.

They cant can they? I mean the record companies will virtually give the records away to record outlets to up the position of that record in the charts. A radio station can be asked to play their records and why wouldn't they?
If it sounds good to you buy it, otherwise leave it on the shelf.
2007-02-18 14:28:08 UTC
Yeah i feel the same. Just because something is number 1 its the taste of the person who brought it. For example Mika isdoing well for singles sale at the moment, but i wouldnt buy his single really. One of my favourite songs at the moment is When your heart stops beating and is down at something like Number 44, but i still love the song because its a good song not cause other people like it.

i will save it user-friendly. maximum suitable rapper - KRS-ONE: by utilizing no potential the tightest, squeaky sparkling or maybe emotive rapper, yet what he does is translate the unquestionably rhythm into words, coincides with any given beat without problems and tells an unquestionably tale in assessment to the different i've got heard formerly. listening to him is like having a teach interior the room with you. He strives for example no longer in basic terms a mandatory image yet greater so a living, respiration certainty into your head. He quite is greater desirable than in basic terms a rapper yet certainly, a poet in his own suitable. maximum suitable producer - Marley Marl: particularly humorous because of the fact he grew to become into backing the Juice group for the period of the Bridge wars subsequently if something KRS-ONE's then mortal enemy. yet have a glance at his profession and the sheer scale of massive call artists he's labored with; Masta Ace, Eric B. & Rakim, LL Cool J, Kool G Rap & Dj Polo and massive Daddy Kane purely to call some. He additionally gave beginning to a roster of scratching recommendations to boot as being the 1st Dj to reprogram a sampled backseat. All in all, the point of Innovation and scale of his success which keeps to ring genuine to even immediately warrants his place as my own acceptance because of the fact the main suitable Hip Hop Produce . . nay, checklist producer of all time.

I agree it does'nt make a difference,as everyone has different tastes, not everyone will go out and buy the same songs. There's loads of songs that i have liked that have had really low positions in the charts, and loads of songs that have been number ones that i have thought were crap.

It doesn't matter to me either, but sometimes a song hits the top 20 quickly and I haven't heard it yet so it being on the list will make me check it out. I won't buy the song if I don't like it though!

No, I don't think Walmarts choice of music is the best. Price and demand are always the motivator with capitalist sales and exposure (censorship). I listen to what I like, and most of it doesn't get any air play.

yeah I agree, but sometimes it is nice to know that someone else likes the same music as you and stuff, but usually I think that the charts are a fix anyway
