They are both great. I play guitar and my wife plays violin. First of the Violin is something special, if you can play one well you've already distinguished yourself from 99% of all people. Any fool can pick up a guitar and start playing right away. The violin is one of the most beautiful instruments of all time, It's vital to classical music, Bluegrass, country, Irish folk, and a violin can rock too. Just hook it up to an amp and it's wicked. There's probably two few people where you live with enough culture to realize how great violin truly is, it's probably better if you follow and do like the rest and just play guitar. Violin is too much work to not be appreciated, besides there's only like 20Million people in the US who already play guitar.

PS you could always play both too right?

There are so many guitar players we have to shoot each other to get a gig. Stick with the fiddle.

M and werty k are sooooooo wrong. You can rock your áss off with a violin. It's what you do with it that counts.

Get beyond the dots. They don't teach you how to do that in conventional lessons, so you may have to teach yourself.

Put your favourite record on. Tune your fiddle to it as best you can (normally it will be concert pitch so you don't have to worry). Then just play, improvise, mess about. Do this as a discipline for 1/2 hour per day. It will be 90% shite even after lots of practice. But you are getting the skills that violin players traditionally don't get.

Then go get a Django Reinhart/Stefan Grapelli CD and see how it's done.

If you learn fiddle properly first and then lean guitar, you will be able to wipe your áss with most of the guitar players you meet. Including me.

you will only get good at the violin if you work at it your whole life. It doesn't take long at all to learn the guitar. Unless you want to be a serious musician, drop the violin and pick up the guitar. Good luck to you!

I play both and violin is more classy, but I enjoy guitar more. But I still like violin. Maybe it has to do with that I take violin lessons, and I teach myself guitar.

while violin is supposed to "duplicate" a humans voice - its an instrument that when played properly can sound beautiful - but if its played not so properly can sound like an alley full of cats in heat

also guitar can be played more polyphonically than a violin - its much more versatile than a violin - its like having an orchestra literally at your fingertips - easy to carry around too - unlike a piano

like the guy above said "Then go get a Django Reinhart/Stefan Grapelli CD and see how it's done." wow! Outstanding!!!!! Django Reinhart was way way way ahead of his time!

I personally prefer the violin...my sister plays and sounds really good....maybe i like the violin better because i have never heard a guitar played "live". thn again if u sounding bad on a violin is worse than sounding bad on a guitar

PS: OMG Purdy!!! i play the flute...that really boosted my self-confidence

It's really personal choice, each can make beautiful music and for the responder who said "that you can't rock with a violin" EVER HEAR OF THE BAND "KANSAS" they were able to fit a violin into their rock and roll music very effectively.

For purely personal reasons I say guitar because you can apply it appropiately to all your favorite songs.Plus you dont need accompaniment to sound really good.A violin requires a instrumental rythym player behind them.

Depends on what you like better, really. I think a guitr is more versitle, and you can join a band when you get good, and make money on the side. My advice would be learn bass guitar. A good bass player is always in demand.

Whatever you like more and you're better at is what's better for you. Me, I play guitar, flutes, piano and djembe but I prefer accoustic guitar, but then I'm just one person.

guitar is better in my opinion because its less screechy but im into rock and that sort of music so i guess it just depends on your taste and style.
