I am going to be getting married in 2008 and I want to get my man a new drum set. The only problem is I don't know the first thing about what to look for in a drum set. Currently he has a 6 peice drum set from when he was a teenager. What kind I don't know because the set is about 20 years old. But what should I look for when buying him a new set of drums?

Fortunately you have some time.

As a drummer I can tell you that most of us are very particular about our "dream" sets.

You should first take the time to learn what his "dream" set is. Some drummers like birch some like maple. Some are brand-loyal. Some want huge sets, some what more modest sets. Some what a lacquered finish, some want a wrap with a cool design. No drummer wants the set that some guy on Yahoo! Answers suggested.

Here's my best advice. Go to music stores with him and see what he gravitates towards. Ask him questions. Listen any time he talks about drums.

Maybe go to the music store on your own and talk to a drummer that works there (don't get help from the guitarist who is working in the drum department that day), and learn as much about the various options as possible.

The more you know about drums yourself the more you will be able to tune in to what he wants.

Good Luck with your drum hunt and your wedding!!

A maple set by TAMA would prolly be an upgrade, or maybe not. And some like the sleek look of a black lacquer finish. Ask his buds what he likes!
