I used to have one when I was younger, I got it at a Renaissance Fair. They usually have about 7 small wooden tubes, all of different length. They're tied together near where your mouth goes. You blow in them like you would a harmonica, but they sound somewhat more like a flute.

Greetings young musical friend: As a teenager, I took up guitar with lessons for a few years and now in my fifties I can still play some and read music for it. In highschool I played clarinet in the band. Later, I learned and became very good at the blues harmonica and the chromatic. I now play the flute and I am comitted to the flute. My wife and little kid play piano. First of all, which music do you like the most--flue or trumpet? Also, you might try both. The embouchure is important to both in different ways and may or may not suit you. I really suggest you rent/borroe both for a month to get some notes out of each of these and see where you are comfortable--one is woodwind, one is brass or 'brasswind'. but they are musical instruments and you will learn music to read and appreciate either way. No reason you cannot do both either. What does realy impress me about your post is that you are asking the question in the first place. Do not let anyone convince you that one instrument is better than any other. They are all good and important. Most important to you is the music. What kind of music and how you make it are secondary. Keep an open mind and practice and listen well whatever your choice(s). Also, do not worrry about what other people "say"--flute is "girly" or trumpet is 'manly'--that is alot of "hocum".....(you get it, I am sure..) After all, you are the player and you will ger the ultimate benefiit as you put in the practice on whatever instrument you choose to play. Best Regards, Irvin Toronto
