Man, I'm trying to do the same thing! But I use a Tascam digital 8-track, not a computer. I've finally decided that we have to record the drums and guitar seperate. What I do is set up mics on all the drums. I plug them all into a mixer, and record them on channel 1 of my recorder.

Then, I plug my guitar into an effects processor. I plug that into a headphone mixer (a handy device that you plug a signal into, and it splits it into seperate headphone jacks, each with their own volume). We listen to the guitar through that, so no guitar sound is in the room (or on the drums mix). We jam and I record the drums. Then, I just add the guitar later.

The drum track is the building block of the entire song. You have to have a good, clean drum track, or the rest will sound like crap. Good luck.

Get a cheep mixer. maybe 12 channels.

If you don't have the money for a mixer and it's just you playing both the drums and guitars lay a drum track down first in Acid them go back and lay down the guitars on another track.

If you have a couple of people playing and you want to record everybody at the same time on different tracks you need a sound card with multiple inputs.

The can get pricey

you need decent overhead mikes, and a mike in the bass drum. if its a home recording you wont need cymbal mics, but you might want one on your snare. the overheads will pick up a bit of everything though, and you get a great 70's rock feel by just using that set up.
