Oh MG ! I laughed so hard I thought I was stoned again when I read your question! Take me back, 'lil sweetheart !
"Wrapped up like a DOUCHE,... we used to sing, and then we laughed our a#%sses off, usually stoned too, but it is actually "revved up like a 'DEUCE', another RUNNER in the night",.... referring to the Ford Deuce Coupe that held two, driver and his squeeze,.. that you hear about in Beach Boys "Little Deuce Coupe".
Yeah, That Car. Chopped up as these cars were, referred to as "cut up" because the car was a 32 Ford 'Deuce' and it was a great car to make into a funny car, roadster, etc. customized,....
great car to Build Out, but NO car to Make Out in.
BUT,... we always had fun with it because we thought it was about getting into a girls pants and finding out she was "in heat" and the guy had to deal with the evidence !
So it got pulled, wrapped up, and tossed from the back seat "into the night" as the car drove on,.... and on,.....
so you got the guy in the back seat goin' down with his new chick ,
and in the passenger front seat is (silicone sister),
[hey, maybe she wanted one of those new 'boob jobs' ], the girl ridin' next to, our best buddy, who is driving, she's wanting to change the station.
Hey, give the chick what she wants !
"she got down, (below the dashboard), but he never got tight, (laid), he's gonna make it, make it, .... through the night." (Ok, so a bl*w j*b beat what Eddie had to deal with in the back seat, right? ).
We had it all worked out.
And then, some jerk got down twenty something years later and laid out all the facts including interviews with the songwriter, to completely blow OUR interp and turn it into a less than inspiring, completely un-intoxicated boring interp that really, I bet, would NEVER boost record sales like the way OUR story goes !
But hey, the guy singing slurs so much I guess this is what makes the song popular in the end.
We accounted that to the fact that he was sh*t-faced stoned when he laid it down.
And that made the song a HIT.
They Are Still Playin' it after all, .... aren't they?
Hey, we had to improvise,.. hearing disorder from the excessive THC, and the reality of hanging with chicks and really not knowing all the facts,... hey,.... waddaya expect?
YOU didn't know what you were hearing either !
Are you laughing?
Well, ....so?
Sup with That?
This was essentially the better of the one hit wonders in the rock world.
First , when Bruce did it, it sucked air,... never heard it.
Then MMEB did it.
WWWOOOOOOWWWW ! Like your head was vibrating !
Hell, the opening keyboard stuccatto tune was enough to make you excited and wanna take a big hit, right?
We had to Think,.... (hard), but then, as we got more stoned,... it was fun to sing along with while running the gravel roads that topped the flood dikes that the Corps built in southern Illinois where we went to get
SSO - SSSTTTOOONNNED!
So, the jugys who made the song a hit, was a band that kind of had a shot at it but never really turned a spade in the full album world.
So now you would ask
"Who the Hell is Manfred Mann's Earth Band?"
Well, WE didn't know !
And we were all lookin' for answers.
Usually we got stoned to do this because we were SURE doing so increased our 'Awareness'.
So we had to READ THE ALBUM COVER to find signs,... signs that were "significant" and "profound".
'Cause we were All Lookin', man.... really Hard,...
I mean,... y'knw?
..."for the signs".
We wanted truth.
And the song, (the way WE heard it), Was Truth.
So the band is not remembered, but we all have had a night that didn't go so well with the opposite sex, right?
The band was Manfred Mann's Earth Band.
Who?
'y-kno ! The Douche song !?
Oh, oh YEAH !!
They really didn't do too well overall but after all it was a Springsteen song,...
so it eventually surfaced as a winner !
So long as HE didn't do it the song was a hit.
He did record it first and it S U C K E D.
Went nowhere.
Hell, WE didn't hear it until it was re-recorded by MMBE and we figured out,....
they had to date the same dam'd chicks WE did !@!.
(Inhale),.............................................................................But,... you want to know,..... (cough),... the unabashed, washed,.... and trashed,.... truth,... so here goes, (and I mean, really dude, it is nottt as cool as the interp we gigged,... got it? (exhale, turns to laughing uncontrollably, blue faced).
So,... so,....
Here is the real poop on the band, the song, and the writer:
(you almost have to VISUALIZE a 13 year old boy, (who has NEVER seen a girl wearing less than a frilly swim suit), asked by the Principal, to read this in front of a classroom of parents at PTA. It's that boring !).
CUT to REAL INTERP:
1) ""Blinded by the Light" is a song written and originally recorded by Bruce Springsteen."
"It was a dud, failing to chart, although the track later gained airplay on progressive rock radio. It then attained its greatest success when it was covered by Manfred Mann's Earth Band, whose version reached Number 1 on Billboard's Hot 100 in 1977."
2) "Those swiftly-paced, jumbled lyrics are stream of consciousness descriptions of a series of bizarre individuals he met while a young artist in New Jersey. Playing small venues, such as bars along the Jersey Shore, Springsteen recounts various characters from these events.
He alludes to Vini "Mad Dog" Lopez, then his drummer, in the opening line "Madman drummers", as well as the "silicone sister" (bartender, possibly referring to an erotic dancer) who encourages him to play a particular, unknown song.
United by the chorus: "And (s)he was blinded by the light/cut loose like a deuce, another runner in the night/Blinded by the light/(S)he got down but (s)he never got tight,(s)he's gonna make it (alright) tonight", the song goes on to chronicle Springsteen's trouble to get the bar patrons, who rarely cared about or even heard the music, to get excited and into the performance."
3) "The chorus of the song features the commonly misunderstood lyric, "Blinded by the light, cut loose like a deuce, another runner in the night." ("Deuce" refers to a '32 Ford Deuce Coupe.) Many listeners hear the word "douche" in place of "deuce." Manfred Mann's Earth Band changed this line slightly to "revved up like a deuce" (often misquoted as "wrapped up like a douche") and repeated it much more frequently in their version than Springsteen did in the original; they also omitted parts of the verses and rearranged the order of the remaining lyrics."
