School band bass drums are usually upright and played with hand beaters. The best way to do a roll is to single hit the drum alternating sides (left-right-left-right...) closer to the edge than the middle because the middle will have too much bounce making it harder to control the speed.
If you are able, try double hits, using your wrist and ring/pinky fingers for the initial hit and your fingers again for the second hit. If done correctly this will give an amazing rumbling type sound. And like in the above single hit example, you'll want to be hitting closer to the edge than the middle of the drum head.
It might seem confusing but if you push back against the bounce of the initial hit using your fingers, you'll have more control and be able to go faster. But you don't want too much bounce or you lose control, so be sure to stay closer to the edge, about 1/3 of the way from the edge to the middle.

do u mean a a roll like just really fast hits like in "one" by metallica? cuz thats a double pedal. either way u gotta get ur feet used to it just like stick control. try stick control exercises with ur feet. paradiddles and wut not. start of slow and work ur speed up. practice makes permanent not perfect so if u learn it sloppy it will hard to clean it up. practice slow then increase the speed in small increments as u do it perfectly.
exercise: put ur metronome on 120 and do tap out eighth notes with ur feet R L R L. eventually when u get it up to doing 16ths at 140 thats pretty good. make sure u can start on L R L R also!!!

You cannot roll(like on a snare with drumsticks) on a bass/kick pedal with only one pedal. You will have to use a double pedal to do this and kick them one after the other really quickly.
