I discovered Don McLean at my aunt's house in the 1970s when I was about 10 years old. She had his self-titled follow-up to the American Pie album on 8-track! Whenever I went to her house, I would spend hours in front of her console stereo player (turntable, FM/AM radio, and 8-track player...ahhh!) listening to this gem.
My favorite Don McLean song is off of this album and it is called Narcisissima. It is not that well known and the album is hard to come by in record stores (although you can buy it on Amazon.com) Narcisissima is irresitably catchy and 30 years later I can still listen to that song, close my eyes, and be transported back in time to my aunt's house.
By the way, many Don McLean fans consider this to be one of his best albums-- if not his best album. If you are just discovering him, this would be a good one to buy. While it does't have any of the big hits on it, on a whole it is solid from start to finish.

Big in the early 1970s. His songs Bye Bye Miss American Pie and Vincent were always on the radio. Yet his star faded quickly. Haven't heard or seen anything of him until you mentioned it. Yet American Pie had the classic line "Drove My Chevy to the Levy but the Levy was Dry. And those Good Ole Boys were drinking Whisky and Rye, Singing This will be The Day I die." Of course, that song is about Buddy Holly, and the plane crash that killed Holly.

His last hit that I recall was a rendition of the Roy Orbison song 'Crying'. This would have been in the early 80s.

I have a recording of him doing Hank Williams Sr. "Lovesick Blues". It's live and pretty good, I like that one.
