Well start with the obvious and be sure to tune the snare and the toms. Do you have heads on the bottom of your toms? If so, you also need to tune the bottom heads. The O-rings will help tame the resonance from the toms and snare, but if they are tuned well, you shouldn't have much of an issue with that. Depending on the type of snare you have, it will have a certain type of sound and it may not be what you are looking for. Play around with the tensioner on the snare chain to try and get the right snap you want. As for the kick drum, I used to stuff with a pillow or a blanket to pad the head up in front where the pedal hits. This also helps with bass drum resonance and will give it a tighter sound. Also, the type of heads that are on it will affect the sound too. Different head coatings are made for different types of drum tones, some thinner and some thicker. Even if they are in good shape, they may not be made for the sound you are after...aside from that, keep in mind the area that you play in will greatly effect the way it sounds to you also. The smaller the area and the more solid walls and surrounding you have (walls, doors) will cause alot of frequency deflection, especially the high end, and can make your set sound like junk, even when tuned and ready to go.
