It is a song from the point of view of dock workers working the night shift loading bananas onto ships. Daylight has come, the shift is over and they want their work to be counted up so that they can go home (this is the meaning of the lyric "Come, Mr. Tally Man, tally me banana/ Daylight come and we wanna go home.")

It's about a guy in Jamaica that works for a banana plantation loading banana ships.("Daylight come and me want to go home")

Bananas were the cotton of Jamaica.

Dole and Chiquita got down there and basically work the natives like slaves.

Can you imagine carrying a six foot bunch of bananas to load on a boat? Now imagine having to do it for twenty four hours to load a banana ship heading back to the states.

"Day light come and me want to go home, Darn it!".

I actually learned about this in my psychology class. The song is actually about slave workers. They would have to work through the night stacking bananas. "Come mister tally man" is about how they would wait for the man to come and count there bananas and see if they could go home. Most of the time they weren't able to.

I think it comes from dutch:

English (like): come mister Tallyman, tally mi banana

Dutch: kom meneer telman tel mijn bananen (come mister countingman, count my bananas)

A life story of existance! To persist in uncomfortable conditions just to make a few bucks to survive! What version are you listening to; Harry Belafonte or Stan Freburg?
