I already know the name of the song, which is "Smoke Gets in Your Eyes" but I don't know who it's by. Just in case there are multiple songs by this name by multiple artists, it starts off with "They asked me how I knew my true love was true".

It's a very old song. I think Jeanette McDonald did a version, also The Platters (my favorite). Sure there were others.

"Smoke Gets in Your Eyes" is a show tune written by American composer Jerome Kern and lyricist Otto Harbach for their 1933 musical Roberta. It was sung in the original show by Tamara Drasin and originally recorded by Gertrude Niesen on October 13, 1933, on the Victor label 24454. It was performed by Irene Dunne for the 1935 film adaptation, co-starring Fred Astaire, Ginger Rogers and Randolph Scott.

Possibly the most famous version was recorded in 1958 by The Platters, which became a number one hit on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 — it reached number three on the R&B charts in 1959[1] — and on the UK charts, where it spent five weeks at the top in February and March of that same year.[2]

Well, so many did that very same song ... the version I know best is the platters, but it was also done by tons of others. Nat King Cole for one, Satchmo for another. Heck, the gal from Wizard of Oz ... I forget her name, she did it to. So did Fred Astaire, the Stan Kenton orchestra, Irene Dunn, oh lord the list goes on and on, but I think the Platters is probably the one you're thinking of. It was that version used in many movies, including American Graffiti.

It was written for Bob Hope in the musical "Roberta." The Platters were about the fifth when they recorded it later. Aloha
