I have been playing guitar for about 4 years. My biggest problem is that I don’t have a specific way to practice my improvisation. Most of the time I will be playing pieces by other musicians. I understand some basic music theories like the modes and diatonic scales, but I can't seem to apply them into my improvisation. Which makes understanding them not much of a help on my playing. I am also very weak on chords and arpeggios, for I have not much idea on how and which to practice on. Thus it makes my improvisation as dulling as just single note scale patterns most of the time. What would be the best advice for me from a great musician like you?

I have been playing guitar for thirty years now and I honestly think I am just beginning to achieve the sounds that I have had in my head. I have had years of lessons, watched countless hours of Tuition Videos, & been to see shows of the greatest guitarists on earth. Soooo frustrating..... because they make it look so easy. My friends say I am a great improviser ! and strangely they said this while I was relaxed and just free jamming with them. I thought about this and realised that you can get too analytical and tensed up about perfectionism. The key for me was to apply some simple riffs and scales over say, a Blues tune, and just get crazy!. I copy a lot of Hendrix licks, SRV, etc coupled with my own quirky tricks. Whamo ! I hit my friends with this all at once and they were blown away ! There is really no big deal about this its just having a bit of 'a road map'in your mind about the melody you are playing over. Remember you might have practiced it in your bed room a 'million times' but your friends don't know this when they hear it fresh. I think harmnoy is important, to move your lead counterpoint with the chord changes. Good luck ! I hope this may help. Hey, it workes for me !

It sounds like you need a good music teacher. Unfortunately, good guitar teachers are not that common. A good piano teacher could probably help you more than any other type of music teacher. Call the closest music store and ask if they could recommend somebody in your local area who is well-known for their improvisation skills. By the way, it would be more fun to improvise with a good pianist than another guitarist.

Hello, one thing i have found is not to get too courght up in the theory but to try and play with other musicans who are more advanced than you. at first you can feel a bit lost or out of your league BUT keep it up. Other people can really spark thing's off in you that you didn't know you were there. Dont try to think of what your playing just feel what u want to play.

One thing i always think is that i can play the things i hear in my head it's just my body can't yet. But jamming with others Unlocks things that sometimes you just cant get on your own.

Just chill with the music and let it flow, thinking too much will hampper your efforts some times.

but don't worry too much because we've all been there!

You don't have practice problem you have an imagination problem.

All you need is a steady beat and/or a bass line to invoke

your own imagination. Then try to reproduce the sounds that you hear in your head on the guitar. It also helps the imagination to use multi track recording tools to build your tunes. If guitar is your feature, then create your rhythm with drum and bass.

sounds like you need to learn more music theory and to spend time in unlocking the fretboard and getting to know the instrument better. i have a similar problem. i can think of all these cool riffs and leads but i can't seem to piece them together to make a song. a good idea is to record yourself playing, and listen to whats good and what isn't. you can then build on that. but it's cool that you want to make you own sound and aren't content just playing covers. more power to ya! (jfrocks.com is a good website i learned alot from)
