You should start out with a teacher. Only a teacher can give you feedback for proper techniques. Once you get the basics, then study on your own.

Juan Martin's guitar books with DVD's are great. You might try the Grade 1-5 books for easy to approach pieces. The techniques for flamenco are difficult and take a lot of time to master, though!! I would suppliment it with studying youtube videos on specific techniques. If you really struggle, contact a teacher, but there are few with flamenco specific knowledge outside of Spain. Most would probably be giving you classical rather than Flamenco technique!

Give it a try though. If you're into in and really struggle, get yourself to Andalucia ;)

I don't think its entirely necessary to learn classical music on guitar, but its better to get the basics of music theory down on the guitar. So it would be helpful, but not necessary. Have fun!
