I heard that song was about a guy who had murdered his brother, and when he had a concert, the guy who committed the murder was in the front row with Phil directing the song to him the entire time he was at the show. Is this true?

There is definitely a huge urban legend regarding this song. Phil Collins did not witness anyone dying or murdered in any way shape or form. Ths song has more to do with his bitter divorce than anything else.

I heard that same story. I also heard the one where his wife was raped and the man came to his concert and sat in the front row. I often wonder how these things get started! :)

Here are some more legends and then Phil explaining what the song is about:

Collins commented on the city legends relating to the music in a BBC international provider interview: "i don't be attentive to what this music is approximately. whilst i replaced into penning this i replaced into dealing with a divorce. And the only element i will say approximately it somewhat is that this is of course in anger. this is the offended facet, or the bitter fringe of a separation. So what makes it much extra comical is as quickly as I hear those thoughts which began some years in the past, somewhat in u.s., of somebody come as much as me and say, 'Did you extremely see somebody drowning?' I stated, 'No, incorrect'. and then each time i flow back to u.s. the tale gets chinese language whispers, it gets further and further complex. it is so complicated, 'cos it somewhat is one music out of each and every of the songs in all probability that i've got ever written that i in my view don't be attentive to what this is approximately, you be attentive to. I think he saw a guy kill someone in a car accident and then drive away. Later, the guy was in the front row...pretty sure about this one.

I heard that story too. I think it's myth. Kinda like Rod Stewart and the stomach pumping.
