Hi. I'm 12 going on 13. I live in Toronto and a lot of great unknown music artists live here. I'm a girl and I want to start a band now so by the time I'm about 15-16 I can actually be somewhere. But a lot of the guys I know would never join a band with girls because they think we can't rock and none of the people I know are committed.I'm not really getting the opportunity to meet new people, let alone people like me.

I don't want to start an all-girls rock band because we will be under estimated in the music industry. I don't want people to say "Oh please, they're just another girl group like Girlicious or Spice Girls"

so here's my problem in a nutshell:

I want to start a band now so I already have a plan for the future but there is no guys/girls that are committed and can play instruments that I know. I want some boys in the band but they're so immature and probably think we have "cooties" so how do I start a band, 1 or two guys and 1 or 2 girls to join it and NOT suck by the time we are teenagers?

(in other simpler words: how am I gonna start a band with my problem?)

I know what you're going through. I tried to start a band and I just couldn't get it to work out. The guys never practiced enough and they were more interested in their jobs and their girlfriends.

You're only 12, though, so don't rush it. You will probably have better luck in college.

In the mean time I recommend focusing on yourself. Keep practicing, learn a new instrument or two, start writing and build a portfolio of songs. Look into majoring in music.

I also recommend going to restaurants or bars (if the age-limit permits) where local musicians and bands play. Try to meet these performers. Try to meet the owners of the establishments too. They can be valuable networking contacts when you finally do start a band.

Haha you shouldnt be worried. Im a very good guitarist and take it from me you aint getting nowhere unless you do something about it. So heres what you do. Go to craigslist.com and put in a question stating; hello im 13 years old and willing to start a band. Need mature people my age willing to try for the top. Now you can also go to yout nearest music store and ask around or ask if you can post something up. This usually works. This is how i had gotten my bassist lol. My drummer i had met in school by asking around and seeing if anyone would be interested in joining a band. So you just have to be outgoing about it. Also you must have a place to practice or your band is gonna have a rough time. i usually plan it at the drummers house cuz i dont want her to go through the trouble of lugging it around :) but seriously take it from me this is probably your best answer. But where you are you might have some trouble. But hey if you cant find band members, you should practice until you are legend lol or atleast until you are good. Then play at a talent show... yeah it takes courage. ill tel you a story in my source.

Well before you start a band think about whether or not it is for the right or wrong reasons. If you truly love music yyou should be willing to take time to get good and be passionate about what you do before you do it. And maybe you should see who can play because if you say I want dadeeda and dadeedah but dodo and fofo can play then why not ask them? Be patient, don't rush into stardom and hey maybe you can find people in high school! I am your age too and I am a singer but I am waiting for the right people because I am truly passionate and wouldn't mind just singing in my room. Think about what I said!
