I wasn't even alive then but I've done my research since I love it so much.

Operation Ivy was a very influential band in the late 80s around the East Bay. They didn't last very long. After that Tim Armstrong and Freeman went on to Rancid.

Husker Du was formed in 79 in Minnesota. They did make the mainstream a little but I think they are severely understated.

Stiff Little Fingers started out in 77 in Northern Ireland. They only lasted six years but influenced a lot of bands performing today.

Screeching Weasel started in 86'. They kept breaking up and reforming. One member (Danny Vapid) went on to form the Methadones (1999). Ben is now puts out solo albums with his new band called Ben Weasel. Both Dan and Ben formed the Riverdales wish sounds incredibly a lot like the Ramones. John went on to Even in Black Outs which sound more folk to me than anything else.

The Vibrators are a British band that formed in 76'. They never broke up.

The Drones formed in 75 in England but didn't last very long.

The Exploited were a Scottish punk band outta 79'. They are more hardcore than the others I have listed.

The Stranglers are known for English rock music but they did play some punk rock too.

The Banned got some new wave in there as well as punk rock. They were in the late 70s.

999 formed in London in 77 they are alos considered one of the first punk rock bands.I do not even know why people would say that when Rocket to Russia (Some songs a hit) came out in 74'.

I'll start you off with those. :)

Hey, consider going to KCDIY.org, there is a podcast with detailed info about every band and the names of all the songs you're hearing. There's also a record label (or was a record label, i'm not sure.) called Posh Boy out of LA that had a lot of really great bands in the late 70s and 80s.

Also the Dead Milkmen and the Specials are a couple of my personal favorites.

* The X-Ray Spex - A chick singer with a saxophone mixed in. Friends of the Sex Pistols.

* The Vibrators - Only released one full-length album, but it's a classic. Great three piece.

* The Stiff Little Fingers - Irish punk band, played Dublin circuit during '77

* The Undertones - Less harsh and rough than most other bands, with lots of love songs, but distorted guitar and punchy riffs. Best single: "You've Got My Number"

* The Adverts - Nearly Gothic in their sound; by far the most musically complex of the 70s punk bands. Great vocalist, hard and heavy riffs.

* 999 - They put out record after record but never saw commercial success. Tons of classic singles.

* Eater - Short-lived group composed primarily of high schoolers. Raw sound.

* Devo - They're best known for "Whip It", but for the most part Devo was a punk band. For the rawest and fastest and dirtiest Devo sound, check out the albums "Recombo DNA", "Devo Live!: The Mongoloid Years", and "Hardcore Volumes 1 & 2: 1974-1977"

* The Damned - Although they started sucking after a while, the first two albums ("Damned Damned Damned" and "Music for Pleasure") are pure punk directly from the heart of London.

* The Jam - More lyrically and pop-oriented than most other punk bands, the Jam are credited with starting the Mod genre. But their solid guitars and pounding vocals put them in the same line-ups as a lot of famous punk bands.

If you like punk, you'll also probably enjoy these obscure but influential bands:

* The Sonics - No, not the basketball team. These wild 60s surf rockers had a sound that was so fast, raw, and harsh that the majority of America rejected them and they never got famous. They only enjoyed some success in the Pacific Northwest.

* The New York Dolls - With wild make-up and women's clothes, these dirty Glam Rockers were a huge influence on the Ramones and other contemporaries. They've got a lot more glitz and glamor than most punk, but a lot of the same attitude.

* Pere Ubu - No one can agree if Pere Ubu is a punk band or not, but they are wild and rough. Totally nuts band, and at least worth checking out.

* Bijhan - Because I've been so helpful in expanding your musical tastes, you should check out MY music. Google me.

PIL made it big in terms of having lots of kids with their buttons.

I saw Minor Threat at U MD and they were the real deal, "this is your stage" and they meant it.
