Question:
Why do people dislike country music so?

My boyfriend says he "hates" country music because it's sad. But, is it just me or, those two words don't mix right. "hate and sad." People doesn't just "hate" something because it's sad. Or do they?

I think a lot of what turns people off is the vocals. Many people find it annoying to hear people singing in deep southern accents with almost yodeling feel to it. Also, country music in general has gotten the reputation of being "uncool" by a majority of the population, and nobody likes to be uncool.

I'm not a big fan of country, but I can appreciate some good old Johnny Cash, or even some good instrumental bluegrass.

People who "hate" country music are usually people that don't understand the music and the emotions behind it. Country music is the only music genre today that takes you back to simpler times and makes you remember all the moments in your life that mean something-whether they're good moments or bad moments. In country music, you find songs that every day people can relate to-songs about family, fun, love, heart break, and a good party. I was raised on country music and it's still what I love today...a lot of people still think country is all about "she took my dog and my pickup and now I'm lonesome", but we know it's more complex than that. There are a lot of people who have no clue what country music is actually about, but they trash it anyway-simply because someone told them it wasn't cool and it was for trailer park hicks and they believed it. Try and get your boyfriend to listen to some country that isn't sad-show him the upbeat side. If he likes it, great! If not, that's fine too. We're all different, after all.

One thing I've never understood about country music and its proponents is why they play dress up. The cowboy boots and hats, the big buckles, and Wrangler jeans. They get on hip-hop style, but country costumes aren't cool, just archaic. Now, let's get to the music. The twang, the false vocals, the steel guitar, the " heartbroke" lyrics, are all about as inviting as a dank bar at 7:00 o'clock in the morning! Also, it's fringe music, not popular at all , believe it or not Christian music outsells country. Why don't we let this music die it's natural death, and throw it aside like the empty tin of Skoal that it is.
2006-06-12 18:42:48 UTC
Its not that bad even though I do much like and prefer rap, r n' b and pop. But country music isn't really sad. In a way, its kind of boring but to some people it is supposed to be lively and happy. But the lyrics are boring and sometimes so boring that makes you sad but I don't hate it. I listen to one or two songs maybe...
2006-06-12 18:42:39 UTC
I think that when we're young, we develope a real affinity for certain musical beats. I fell in love with Reggae, Ska and Punk early on. I hated Country because I lived in Houston during the Travolta / Urban Cowboy / Smokey and the Bandit phase and I wanted nothing to do with Cowboy music.

But this affinity for style changes.

I'm now 42 and have gone to Jazz and ...... Country. I like the new style of country. I like the sentiment and there's a kind of Gospal Country (like Underwood sings), that I just love.

Just stop next to me at a stop light when I have my windows open. You'll hear me singing, "Jesus take the wheel" at the top of my longs.

I even say "Howdy" to my workmates!

I think people dislike country music because it really means something. Every country song I listen to has a significant meaning to it. People just want to hear immature music with a great beat and some mediocre lyrics. Country music is anything but that. I'm not saying country music doesn't have a great beat, I'm just saying that's what people want to hear these days.

Honestly, country music represents all red-neck music and some white people don't like to be labeled as red-necks anymore. Plus us blacks go after them first when it comes to making fun of white people. Not really sorry because I'm not trying to offend anyone intentionally but I am trying to be as honest as I can be. That's just my opinion on why people dislike country music now. It's actually a grievance thing. I suggest you look into it.

People like whatever music they listen to all the time. Lock him in a room for a month with Country Music and he will love it.
2006-06-12 18:41:18 UTC
There is a stereotype that country musicians are red-necks, hicks, or stupid. That the music is whiney and too pro-military/american. Yea sometimes they sing about sad topics but don't all genres of music? I love it because its different, and I am pro-military and its nice to know some people will openly support our troops. They have some of the greatest love songs of all time too.

In my experience most people who don't like country music and I'm talking about true country music not that mixture of junk that they play on the airwaves today. They don't like it because they have experienced some of what they are hearing and it brings back unpleasant memories, that they are trying to forget.
2006-06-12 18:43:06 UTC
I LOVE country music, I'm just not nuts about the bland crossover pop that modern country has become. Gimme some George Jones.
2006-06-13 16:39:33 UTC
Country rocks. I rather grew out of it, but when I used to listen to it with my dad we had a lot of fun. You like what you like, and if someone has a problem with it, tell them to get over it! :D

And I TOTALLY agree with you in that comment about "isn't it better to listen to country than rap about drugs and sex?" I despise rap and R&B and hip-hop and all that crap. Good for you for going your own ways! :)

RAP=Retards Attempting Poetry

:D lol I say that all the time.

Personally, country music sounds like nails on a chalkboard to me. Especially the really twangy stuff... I don't listen long enough to even figure out that it's sad because it hurts my head.
2006-06-12 18:41:20 UTC
He probably doesn't like the way the sad songs make him feel. they probably cause him to remember a sad situation or event. Some songs probably cause him to remember past people who he would rather forget.

Country music probably just makes him remember feelings he feels uncomfortable feeling. He doesn't hate the music but hates how the music makes him feel.

I think it's because people can't take it seriously. Country music varies on all emotions...happiness, troubled times, love, family, life in general, etc. It's not at all like heavy metal which is all about rage and drug addiction. Heavy metal is just noise to me. You can't even understand it!
2006-06-12 18:44:37 UTC
I love country music and I'm Latin. I love the beat when it's lively and, when it's sad, the music is wonderful to listen and dance to.
2006-06-12 18:42:23 UTC
It takes all kinds to make the world go 'round. I like it myself. . . . could be the twang. I wouldn't say it makes me sad, but I definitely well up with tears some times and have to turn it off. But when that happens, I was down or melancholy to start with, not visa versa.
2006-06-12 18:42:18 UTC
I love country music!

people like country music because:

- they like the sound of the music

- they identify with the themes of the songs

- everybody is "a little bit country" just like Marie Osmond

- shania twain sings country music

some examples of why country music artists like country:

Ray Scott

My Kind of Music

Oh, I met this girl I swore was close to perfect.

I could see the ring, the dress, and the whole nine yards.

I had a country station on and she reached and turned it.

Said she couldnt stand the sound of a steel guitar.

We hit the town to catch an early movie.

And ol' Kris Kristofferson played the leading role.

I said "That's my man!" She said "Who's he?"

I jumped up and said "Girl, we gotta go!"

She dont like to play my kinda music.

She's never heard a Waylon Jennings song.

She's never been a fan of Willie Nelson.

So there aint no way in hell we'll get along.

She told me she thinks country musics hokey.

She said "You can't dance to it, and all the songs are sad."

I ****** my eyebrow and said "You must be jokin!"

"Ain't no excuse for havin taste that bad."

Then I asked her if she'd heard of Alan Jackson.

And she said "Didn't he sing that song called 'Where Were You?'"

I said "Ya, but girl, that man's a livin' legend."

And she said "Really? I thought he was new."

She dont like tp play my kinda music.

She's never heard of David Allan Coe.

She can't get enough of Whitney Houston.

And I'm thinkin "Lord, that's all i need to know."

So when the night was over i walked her to her door.

And i bid that girl an overdue farewell.

And without a good night kiss i jumped back in my truck.

Turned on some Hank and cranked it loud as hell.

She don't like to play my kinda music.

She don't know Sunday morning comin down.

She can't see what's so cool about he stopped lovin' her today.

Or angel flying to close to the ground.

She told me that she sorta likes the Eagles.

She couldn't name one hit by Johnny Cash.

No, she don't like to play my kinda music.

So i had to tell that girl to kiss my ***!

Trace Adkins

Songs About Me

I met a guy on the red eye

He spotted my guitar

and said what do you do?

I said, I sing for a living,

Country music mixed with

a little rock and a little blues

He said I'm sorry

but I've never been crazy

'bout that twang and trains and hillbilly thing

What ever made you want to sing stuff like that?

I just looked at him and laughed and said

cause it's songs about me

and who I am

songs about loving and living

and good hearted women and family and God

yeah they're all just

songs about me

songs about me

So I offered him tickets

I said you'll see what I mean

if you show up tonight

he said I doubt you'll change my opinion

I'll be kind of busy, but hey man, I'll try

Then later on when we finished our songs

about scars and cars and broken hearts

I saw him, he was standing there

right next to the stage

and he shouted

man you were right

it was like you sang those

songs about me

and who I am

songs about loving and living

and good hearted women and family and God

yeah they're all just

songs about me

songs about me

So I'll just keep on singing

'til I hear the whole world singing those

songs about me

and who I am

songs about loving and living

and good hearted women and family and God

yeah they're all just

songs about me

songs about me
