Or is it just my age,38,a child of the 70's and 80's.Songs were much more catchy and singable to then, now, they all just sound the same.

Years ago,you could put the radio on,hear a song, and know who was singing,Tina Turner,Aretha Franklin etc, they all sounded different, and had distinctive voices.
Now if you were to blindfold me and play a Aguilar song or Spears or whoever it is in the charts now,i would not know the difference, everybody and every song sounds the same now???

It is mostly rubbish.

given the selection of modern music for young people I'd feel cheated if I was a teen now.

Bad examples there, anyone who has ever listened to Christina Aguilera and Britney Spears would instantly know the difference. But anyway, I think the charts are more about catchy, sell-able music now and since the mainstream wants a specific sound, that's why there are so many 'artists' out there that sound the same. Because they all want the fame and the money.

To be fair, every decade of music has had its own pop stuff. On this day back in 81 the number one song was "Physical" by Olivia Newton-John, remember how annoying that was? Anyway, there's good music to be found, but there are also more artists & styles of music to search through so it may take some time before you find what you like.

It's funny because I overheard a teenager say once "I don't like that old music, all the singers sounded the same and it's boring!" I guess you have to be constantly exposed to a certain type of music in order for it to be recognizable to you.

If you are referring to mainstream or chart music then it is equivalent to processed foods, it is mass marketed, is of low quality and the best thing about it will usually be the packaging.

I don't mean to sound harsh but I work as a session drummer, I hear the same old rubbish day in and day out, I also happen to produce music and know that most of the stuff out there only sounds the way it does as labels tend to use the same producers time and time again, they are the actual talent behind most modern acts.

e.g do you think cheryl cole sits down and writes and produces her own albums, all those late nights gettin the sound she wants, lol no

What I found disgusting was that people actually voted britney spears as a better singer that Aretha Franklin, what is up with that ? the music industry is ruined with the likes of x factor types and record companies that simply do not take risks anymore, but the record companies are not only to blame, people are lazy too, they don't want to look for anything, they want instant buzz also so they are not prepared to develop their musical range again like the fast food thing, quick hit, no quality or substance.

However there are many many good bands , producers, artists out there too it is just far harder for them to get signed or a break in the industry as they cannot be marketed the way record companies want or out of their own personal choice.

hehe you're just getting old, join the club.

There's plenty of good and distinctive music out there but also a lot of dross. If you think about it popular music has always been that way. I'm guessing the difference now is that you listen to less radio, or at least you listen less attentively because you're not looking for and needing the same things from music.

Could also be as you've grown older your tastes have matured and grown. Would you still watch the same TV shows over and over again that you did as a child? I very much doubt it. Time to stop listening to popular radio stations and start searching for other sources of good music to fill up your ipod, either that or start buying Aretha Franklin's entire back catalogue.

I think it's a business thing now. Artist's rushing to produce albums, singers being mass produced on American Idol/ X Factor, and an overall opinion not to 'Rock the Boat' too much and stick to what's popular, rather than to stretch their creativity.

There was a lot of crap in the 70's and 80's too, but it just wasn't mass produced and thrown in your face every five seconds!

For me personally, I hate to overstretching of the vocal notes - sure, it shows you're a good singer, but it makes a crap song!

Nope!

it all depends where you look really, there's always good music out there.

Some bands i like from within the last few years are:

Explosions in the Sky, Gaslight Anthem, Anthony Green, Manchester Orchestra, Desaparecidos, Streetlight Manifesto, EndeverafteR, Fake Problems, etc etc

It's all down to taste. Most of the music I hear at the moment is either rubbish or, at best, mediocre. Still, I thought Tina Turner was rubbish as well, so... Horses for courses.

I personally think that all of the Top 40 stations play junk. I think that there is still good music out there, but these days you have to go out and find it yourself and can't just listen to the radio.

It's all down to individual opinion. What I think is rubbish the next person may think is great. There is nothing wrong wth that.

Yes it is, I completely agree!

However, didn't our parents say exactly the same thing when we were kids?
