Question:
Is the song Hotel California Satanistic?

I recently bought the song "Hotel California" by the Eagles, 1976. I really enjoy the tune, but the lyrics confuse me. I gave it some thought and research, and I believe that the song does not support Satanism, nor does it deny it, but instead is about Satanism in general, more in a good way than in a bad. However, I would like to think that my opinion is correct, since i already spent $1.29 on it on iTunes. What is your opinion? Be sure to back it up. Whoever gives the best supported answer will receive 10 points? i believe or whatever it is now (it was 10 points 2 years ago, not sure what it is now). Please help me out, i don't want to listen to a song that does not support my morals.

In my opinion there's nothing to worry about. It simply describes the way they see L.A. and the industry. Lyrics are in a creative way. Once, someone found the virgin Mary on toast. So, hey, if you look for it, you can find everything. But why would there be a dark message if the song is already an expression of ideas?

Hotel California is a classic and people tend to pick on these. There is no Satanic background for it. If it was intended for Satanism, then the message would be clear, not hidden. A lot of these things are made-up and you shouldn't believe in rumors that have no basis. Sing the lyrics yourself and do you really think that the Eagles had a dark intention?

Perhaps the most interesting lyric in the song, if you want to look at the Satanic theme, is this:

"So I called to the captain/ please bring me my wine/ he said/ We haven't had that Spirit here since 1969."

I believe the line about "wine" may be the man requesting to take Communion. The answer from the captain signifies that the Holy Spirit is no longer present in this place; he has been gone since 1969. 1969 is the year the Satanic Bible was published.

I find the song quite descriptive. It doesn't seem to be either pro or anti Satanism; it just describes a setting of decadence and decay, hope and regret, of a man uncertain. It's the perfect type of art that lets the listener himself interpret it and form his own opinion.

Do you even know what "Satan" means? It's Hebrew, and it means opposing God, as in not believing in him. This is about materialism and excess. California is used as the setting, but it could relate to anywhere in America. Don Henley in the London Daily Mail November 9, 2007 said: "Some of the wilder interpretations of that song have been amazing. It was really about the excesses of American culture and certain girls we knew. But it was also about the uneasy balance between art and commerce."

from wiki.....

"Don Henley called it "our interpretation of the high life in Los Angeles" and later reiterated "it's basically a song about the dark underbelly of the American dream and about excess in America, which is something we knew a lot about.""
