Can You Suggest Some Other Songs Like These?

I am a real rock fan (I like most types of rock and its assorted subgenres). One thing I really get a kick out of is when a band is able to make music that sounds like something completely different using regular guitars and drums. Some that leap immediately to mind include:

"Hell's Bells" by AC/DC--at the beginning, the guitar and drums sound like real bells tolling.

"In a Big Country" by Big Country--the guitar throughout the song sounds like bagpipes.

"Jumping Someone Else's Train" by The Cure--in the beginning it really sounds like a train accelerating.

I am not talking about use of a synthesizer to reproduce sounds, but rather creative use of instruments to make them sound like other, non-traditional rock music sounds.

Can you suggest any other songs I should check out where the bands have gotten really creative in creating sound effects with basic rock instruments such as guitars, basses and drums?

Train Kept A-Rollin' by The Yardbirds, at the intro Jeff Beck guitar sounded like train horn.



Nothing But Love by Mr.Big, Paul Gilbert sounded his guitar like violins.



The Joker by Steve Miller Band, they mix a lot of funny sound and built it around the song.

If you're a fan then you probably already know, but on Seven Nation Army by the White Stripes, Jack uses a 'false' bass note. He tunes his guitar down to create notes that sound very much like they are from a bass guitar. It had me fooled for nearly a year before I read about it! (duh!) Not so much of a sound effect, but definitely creative use of an instrument to make it sound like something else. They use some interesting sounds on Get Behind Me Satan too which always makes it an interesting listen. Also, love the Cure and only recently realised how great AC/DC are.

Joy Division - Atrocity Exhibition has a guitar that sounds like it is cutting though flesh & bone

"Liftebo" an Italian Rock Group. They're great. Its sung in Italian so, I pay attention to the guitars more than the words (I only know a tiny amount of Italian --- enough to ask, What's Cool in Rock) ...



Liftebo is not as heavy as you're requesting, but a very rock ambiance that is great.

I LOVE this song. They've done extrememly well in the handling of their instruments, and this song, along with their singers voice, just blows me away everytime. After the lyrics finish, there are a series of face-melting electric guitar solos that last a few minutes. Just simply awesome. Enjoy!
