I'm looking to buy a bass guitar to play country music on, but I don't know if I should buy an acoustic bass or electric bass.

Overwhemingly, the Fender Precision bass...especially if you're talking about traditional country.

There are several price points for that instrument, depending on whether you want a US made or an import. The Made In Mexico Fenders are a very good deal if you're not wanting to spend a lot of cash.

Good luck.

You want a fretted, electric bass guitar, although you should really use an acoustic double bass (fretless) if you are serious about bluegrass or rockabilly. An acoustic double bass is not a guitar and even a cheap one will cost you 3 times what a decent electric bass and amp will go for.

An acoustic bass guitar, fretless or fretted is a novelty instrument that would be far-less useful than, for example, a mandolin or ukelele. It can be fun in an acoustic setting.

Smart Money tip: If you are just curious, you can pick up any old regular 6-string guitar, electric or acoustic for even less money, remove the highest two strings and TUNE it as a 4-string bass.
INDEED!!!!

That would depend on the type of performances you plan on doing. Traditional bluegrass sounds would be replicated better with the traditional acoustic bass. But if you are going to perform some of the modern country, the electric bass might fit in with the rock guitar sound.

Almost every country band in that last 30 or more years has used electric bass. Upright bass is only prevelant in bluegrass, etc., not country.
